The AI world is truly full of fun and immersive experiences. Recently, I have tried some AI tools and also noticed discussions about whether "Prompt Engineer" is a transitional profession. My simple and direct conclusion is "no", while a more conservative conclusion is "not in the short term, and individuals have enough time to utilize this profession to create income, accumulate experience before the profession disappears, and then transition".
Correctly identifying the pain points of most people's needs#
Many people may find themselves weak in language organization and lacking logical thinking when writing copy or communicating with others. For example, someone around me has always believed that ChatGPT is not useful and lacks accuracy. Although I have told him many times to make good use of this tool and to refine the questions in order to get more accurate answers, he still tends to ask broad questions such as "help me generate a research report on xxxx" and "write a paper about xxxx". The problem itself is not inappropriate, but there is a huge gap between the answers he expects and the answers given by ChatGPT.
There will always be people who cannot accurately express their needs in communication, let alone expect them to do so when communicating with AI. Therefore, we need an "intermediary" role to solve this problem and make the expectations of Party A more specific.

Learning costs exist for different language models#
An excellent Prompt Engineer needs to understand the backend processes of different language models. Understanding how these models parse prompts in order to write more accurate and detailed instructions. Because even advanced AI needs external instructions to operate, input is a hard condition. This is something ordinary people find difficult to do and requires time and technical background investment.
The prompt process requires patience and testing#
AI systems may produce inaccurate, irrelevant, or even incorrect outputs. Prompt Engineers can reduce these issues by designing safer input strategies to ensure the reliability and security of the outputs. The process from receiving requirements to AI generating solutions requires a considerable amount of time. Similar to the process of designing, implementing, and debugging when writing code, accumulating experience is necessary to write more accurate prompts and reduce error outputs.
Prompt Engineers require a combination of talents#
Prompt Engineers can actually become bridges between various fields, helping experts from different fields communicate efficiently with AI systems to achieve better decision-making and innovation. These Prompt Engineers are "I-shaped" or "T-shaped" talents who utilize their extensive knowledge in various fields to connect different domains. With the continuous development of AI technology, various models and algorithms emerge. Prompt Engineers can assist in integrating these technologies and achieve better performance and application effects through optimized input strategies.
In conclusion, I believe that Prompt Engineers have value and necessity. With the development of AI technology and the expansion of application scenarios, this role will continue to play an important role.
